i just found my favorite mexcan restaurant! thanks to ‘e.r.’ to suggest this place. so for sunday after church lunch, r-family and k-family made a trip to this restaurant.
first of all, let’s talk about their menu. they have a lot of stuff on their menu to choose from. i would say twice as many as a typical mexican restaurant. i like that. i like to sit back and read through the menu. that gets my appetite going, as i chow down on the chips and salsa. their salsa was average, nothing to write about.
my wife ordered something called space shuttle special or something like that. i was rather turned off by the name. that was kind a bad signal to me. i don’t like a restaurant where they change the taste just because of what customer wants. i like restaurants where the chef stick to their taste. i think that is the right principle. that is why i am not a very good business man.
now, i was about to order something with shrimp, but as i usually do at a mexican restaurant, i ask for something that is not on the menu, ‘MENUDO’! as i ordered it, the waiter went to the kitchen to see if we had any left. he comes back and tells me they have five servings left. LUCKY ME!
ok, let’s talk about menudo. i fell in love with menudo when i first discovered in waco. there was a hole-in-a-wall restaurant called ‘red barn’ near hill crest hospital. (not the one by bosque river) mary, the owner, makes a mean menudo. i would go there for saturday brunch regulary. her menudo is very flavorful. she uses pigs feet along with a typical menudo ingredients, tripe and hominy. i like it a lot, but i never really got into cleaning up the foot, eating all the gelatinous parts.
since then i have tried many menudo, but nothing came close to mary’s. one day my wife goes to dollar tree store in kemah and finds a menudo can. she buys one, $1, and brings one home for me to try it. well, not bad. for a buck, you can not go wrong with it. the balance of hominy:tripe is like 65%:35%. i like it a little more meatier, but the flavor is quite good. now i can have menudo once a week, or even more.
so, now back to mamacita’s menudo. the flavor is great, almost as good as mary’s. it is quite meaty which i like a lot. hominy:tripe ratio is like 25%:75%. price is $6.50. (i think it’s a little pricey. mary’s menudo is $4.50.)
kid’s and kiki liked their food too. so this place may become our regular hang out!
j-)
p.s. i have this guilty feeling every time i order menudo with friends. ‘am i eating something gross? am i going to ruin their appetite? am i going to gross them out?’ but it never stoped me from my STRONG desire to taste such a great invention.
